About the program

In an increasingly interconnected world, the need for legal professionals who understand the complexities of international relations, human rights, trade, and diplomacy is more vital than ever. The BA in International and European Legal Studies program is uniquely designed to provide students with the tools they need to navigate these complexities and emerge as competent, well-rounded legal professionals.

This program combines the study of both international and European-specific legal systems, making it particularly attractive for students who wish to develop a global perspective on law and governance and is primarily aimed at those interested in a career in international institutions or specifically in the structures and institutions of the European Union.

The program takes an interdisciplinary approach, blending the study of law with courses in politics, economics, and human rights. This allows students to not only gain an in-depth understanding of legal principles but also to see how these principles operate in broader societal and political contexts.

Courses are taught by a diverse and highly-qualified faculty, drawn from across Europe and beyond, who bring a wealth of practical experience and academic expertise. Additionally, the small class sizes and interactive teaching methods enable students to develop close mentoring relationships with their professors.

The program also includes an internship component, providing students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in legal settings. Such experiences not only help students apply their classroom knowledge to real-world problems but also significantly improve their employability upon graduation.

“We stand on the threshold of a new era of international law. Geopolitical tensions associated with changes in the power position of countries, the climate agenda, global migration or the growing importance of AI have made the demand for the creation of a new stable and fair international legal framework stronger than ever since the end of World War II.

The study of international law provides key knowledge and skills to understand how states, international organizations, individuals, NGOs and transnational corporations behave and make decisions in the future world. International law is not just a system of legal norms and rules – it must be a means of promoting justice, protecting human rights and dignity, managing global challenges and supporting cross-border cooperation. Studying international law today means being fully prepared to participate in shaping the new international legal pillars of the twenty-first century tomorrow.”

“European Union law is becoming increasingly important not only within the EU itself, but also globally. Examples include the EU AI Act, climate legislation, and the GDPR. Within the IELS study program, students will gain an understanding of how the EU legal system operates, and what opportunities it offers in the areas of business, trade, and labor mobility. They will learn how to work with EU legislation and judicial decisions while developing their logical reasoning and legal skills. As a result, they will acquire key competencies that will enable them to apply their education in professional settings not only within the EU, but also beyond it.”

See what our students have to say

  • AAU has high-quality professors and a wide variety of classes to choose from. The courses that are offered at AAU are quite unique compared to the other universities in the Czech Republic and the student body is extremely diverse which has led me to meet people from all across the world.

  • AAU classes are small, usually up to 25 people, which I believe makes the interaction between international classmates more personal and diverse. It is a huge advantage as students to get an opportunity to speak up, to express our personal opinion as well as get a chance to practice our presentational skills.
