Non-EU Students
By Czech law, foreigners staying in the Czech Republic longer than 90-days have to arrange travel and medical insurance. And it must cover the entire length of your visa and be issued in the Czech language to comply with visa requirements. The insurance benefit must be a comprehensive plan and cover at least EUR 400 000.
There are many trusted Czech insurance providers including: AXA, Colonnade, Slavia, SV Pojišťovna, Uniqa, and Pojišťovna VZP.
Private insurance provides broad coverage for medically necessary healthcare similar to public health care. Services such as cosmetic procedures, some dental treatments, and certain premium services are usually not covered or require a premium coverage.
EU Students
Health insurance in the Czech Republic covers all EU and Schengen countries. If you are an EU citizen with health insurance, you should be able to maintain and use it in the Czech Republic. Some students choose to buy a Czech cover, regardless, to avoid out of pocket payments and claims, but this is up to you.
Holders of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) who stay in Czechia must register the EHIC with the Czech health insurance company.
Czech Students
Czech students face a slightly different situation. Anyone studying in a Czech university program—like AAU—full-time has student status, meaning the state pays their health insurance until the age of 26.
Pension insurance is not the same as health insurance, and it is not required or paid for by the state. Students only pay pension insurance when they work or voluntarily opt-in.
